Explore Leiden and the surrounding area

With so many students in the city, there's no escaping the presence of the bicycle! And pedal power is the ideal way to get around the city quickly. If you're visiting Leiden you might choose to discover the city with a cycle tour, as there's nothing better than to explore a city actively.

And if you're staying longer, you can travel further afield and explore the local countryside. Just hire a bike and get pedalling! Whether you choose the Farmer's Cheese Route or the Holland Polder Route, the Leiden region has a beauty all its own. From the flowering bulb fields in the spring to magnificent country estates. Or sniffing the salty North Sea air with your feet in the sand. It's all possible in the Region of Surprises. The Flowerbulb Region

The back garden of Leiden, just a short bike ride away! it's a truly beautiful experience, cycling through the brightly coloured bulb fields in spring when the flowers are blooming in full glory. And you can pick up a bunch of flowers from many of the farms you cycle past. This cycle route is great in combination with a visit to Keukenhof.

The Dune Region

The city is great, but sometimes you just want to get out for a breath of fresh air. Where better to do this than on the coast? Leiden is close to the North Sea Coast, which is easily reachable by bike. You cycle through a varied area of dunes, which can reach a height of 25 metres. Reward your efforts with a tasty fish lunch, an ice cream or a cup of coffee in one of the seaside resorts such as Katwijk or Noordwijk. Not to be missed!

Kagerplassen Polder Region

A cycle tour that makes a great day out takes you through the Kagerplassen polder region. A relaxing tour of meadows, lakes and canals, with as highlight a friendly restaurant with outdoor seating area on Kaag Island that can only be reached by ferry. The Kagerplassen region is renowned for its natural lakes with their rustic banks where you can see many striking windmills. This is as Dutch as it gets!
