28 km of canals, 88 bridges!

The historic city centre is home to no fewer than 28 kilometres of canals. To cross all these canals, you need bridges, and the city centre alone has no fewer than 88 bridges! The historic city centre is surrounded by water. These surrounding moats, known as singels, enclose many green spaces, which is why this area is called Singelpark. Leiden is fantastic when experienced from the water! So hire a boat from one of the city's many boat hire companies, or book a canal tour or one of the great package deals.

Coming with your own boat?

Leiden is easily accessible with your own boat. The quaysides are low and there are mooring places throughout the city. There are jetties for mooring sloops at strategic locations, and many of the quaysides have mooring rings. Do take care when passing under low bridges, there are a lot of them in Leiden! At the Leiden Tourist Office Leiden you can buy the 66 bridge route for € 3.

Sleep overnight in the marina?

Leiden has two marinas, at Beestenmarkt and De Poort. The marina at Beestenmarkt is for day visitors only, so you are not permitted to stay overnight. However on the outskirts of the city centre this is permitted. You can reach the marina from the east via the Zijl, the Rijn-Schiekanaal and the Oude Rijn. For more information, please call the harbour master's office at +31 6 34 21 30 26.
