Today, the Surinamese writer and freedom fighter Anton de Kom has become an indispensable part of history. His controversial book We Slaves of Suriname from 1934 fell into oblivion over time.

In the 1960s, Rubia Zschuschen, student and member of the Surinamese Student Union, discovered De Kom's manifesto for freedom and justice for all Surinamese in the Leiden university library. The Surinamese Student Union would embrace this work, in which the history of Suriname is described for the first time from the perspective of the colonized, and make it widely accessible.
