In the footsteps of the Leiden industrial revolution
A brief guide presents twenty special historic buildings showcasing industry and technology in Leiden. Right up until the 1960s, Leiden was an industrial city with throbbing engines and smoking chimneys. But economic developments brought change, and one by one the factories shut down. There was a spate of demolitions. However, not all the traces were wiped out and Leiden still has many buildings – now converted into offices and apartments – whose façades and chimneys are a testament to their industrial origins. This booklet guides you past the industrial heritage of Leiden, where countless inhabitants of the city spent long hours working to earn a living.
The City of Industry booklet is available from the VVV Leiden Tourist Information Office and costs €4.90.
