Since 1414, the St. Cecilia Convent stood here, which became the property of the city during the Reformation.

After a lottery to raise money, it was converted into a dol and pest house in 1596. In the 17th century, ‘plague victims’ were moved outside the city. In 1636, Professor Heurnius started the practice of giving lectures at the bedside for the university. Herman Boerhaave became world famous for this method around 1720. Since 1991, this has been the Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, dedicated to Dutch scientific history.
