Lecture: The history of the paisley motif

The Paisley motif is one of the most versatile, beloved and well-known patterns.

It can be found on baby clothes, ties, and shirts, but also on steampunks and bikers! This lecture will discuss the history of the paisley pattern, its origins in Iran (where it is known as buteh), and how it spread throughout the world via India. The pattern can be found from Africa to East Asia. More than 175 years ago, buteh became known as the pattern widely produced in the Scottish town of Paisley.

Augusta de Gunzbourg is the Head of Exhibitions and Education at the Textile Research Centre. She has been studying the collection for years and strives to share as many stories as possible. Her research focuses on historical fashion and Asian textiles.

The lecture will be given in English.
