In 1824, Marie Cornélie, Countess of Wassenaer Obdam and lady of Twickel Castle, traveled to St. Petersburg as part of the entourage of Princess Anna Pavlovna—consort of William II—to spend an extended period at the Tsarist court.

She had a great love for music and provided detailed accounts of all her musical experiences—both during her travels and at court—in a secret diary. She was herself a talented amateur pianist, having studied under the internationally renowned teacher Gertrude van den Bergh, who also served as the piano instructor to several members of the Dutch royal family.
