The oldest parish church in Leiden, consecrated in 1121 as a chapel of the count's court. Its current form was constructed between 1390 and 1565.

The 70-meter tower collapsed in 1512. The church is maintained by a foundation. The large organ is a Van Hagerbeer organ (built between 1637 and 1643) that still contains many medieval pipes. The parents of Rembrandt van Rijn, the pastor of the Pilgrims, John Robinson, and many prominent scholars were buried here.
