Around 1622, the Leiden painter Jacob van Swanenburgh rented this house, where he had his studio and teaching space. It was during this period, between approximately 1621 and 1623, that the young Rembrandt van Rijn received his first formal training in painting here. Under Van Swanenburgh's guidance, Rembrandt took his first steps in painting, became acquainted with the techniques, materials, and artistic insights of his time, and laid the foundation for his later development into one of the greatest masters in Dutch art history.
