Protocols of Becoming

What happens when art and science come together? In Protocols of Becoming, artist Sonja Bäumel brings the world of stem cells to life. Discover at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave how art, science, and questions about the malleability of life meet.

Stem cells possess a unique property: they can develop into different types of cells. Scientists are investigating how to steer this process, but complete control is still not possible. It is precisely this tension that forms the starting point for Bäumel’s work. How far can we go in shaping life? And what does stem cell research mean for our view of what life is?

In the installation, Bäumel gives cells a visible and tangible form. Soft, hairy, and fragile objects depict a world that is normally only visible under a microscope. In doing so, she makes complex scientific developments accessible and invites you to look at stem cells from a different perspective.
