Gerard Scanlan: refined wood inlay with a tartan motif

Gerard Scanlan has Scottish roots. You can find these reflected in the wooden objects he creates: jewelry boxes, little robots, and furniture. He inlays them with wood types such as maple, walnut, elm, holly, smoked oak, or wenge, which imitate tartan fabric.

He says about it himself: “This kind of work is often described as meticulous. Well, to be honest, apart from the occasional slip-up with a chisel or a poorly timed hammer blow, pain has nothing to do with the things I make. I love doing this. I only use materials from renewable sources and make things that last for generations. Things that people can use, cherish, and enjoy. Things for you?” His little wooden robots are sometimes inspired by figures from reality or the theater world, such as the Scottish pediatric oncology nurse Flo Jo, MacBeth, and Major Tom. They each have their own storage crate.
