Hanuman travels the world
Contact
Dr. Priya Swamy, Curator Globalization and South Asia, Wereldmuseum. This lecture highlights the ways in which Hanuman as a global figure has travelled and made home in different traditions of religion, performing arts, and literature.
It uses three examples: first, it looks at Hanuman’s place in the religious landscape of the Caribbean. Then, it introduces his role in the performing arts and storytelling traditions of Thailand, particularly the locally inflected legend of Hanuman and the Mermaid. Finally, it looks to contemporary art in Bali, discussing Hanuman’s role in the work of Balinese contemporary artist, I Wayan Budiarta.
