This city gate was built in wood around 1611. The stone gate was built in 1669 to a design by W. van der Helm.

The gate itself was built in a style that was old-fashioned for its time, the Dutch Renaissance, perhaps to match the buildings in the neighborhood. The octagonal dome is typical of its time. The gate served as a prison for a long time. Its name is derived from De Morsch, the marshy meadowland outside Leiden. Of the eight city gates, only this gate and the Zijlpoort have been preserved.
