Wavelength Festival 2023

WAVELENGTH has been the festival for new music and science at the Leiden Bio Science Park since 2017. With distinctive programming, the festival encourages dialogue between the two disciplines of 'science' and 'music'.
The festival is housed at Leiden Bio Science Park, the international centre of the latest scientific developments in biotechnology and medicine.
Edition 2023
During the upcoming edition of Wavelength, instruments take centre stage, both scientifically and musically. Naturally linked to inspiring (short) lectures, introductions and performances.
Carolyn Shaw's Boris Kerner provides a wonderful opening for Wavelength-2023. Not only is this composition thematically linked to the traffic engineer Kerner (designer of the three-phase traffic theory), we also hear a coming together of cello and ceramic flower pots. And there is a link to the work of Marith Dieker, PhD on research into traffic radio in the Netherlands and Germany between 1950 and the present.

Maastricht University's 'Sonic Skills' research group focuses on the scientific value of sound. From ornithologists to car mechanics, listening is paramount. For medical personnel, the sound of the body is still an important indicator of possible diseases. What does sound still mean in our visual-media-dominated age?
Richard Reed Parry's Music for the Heart and Breath is guided by the duration of a breath and the player's heart rhythm. Each member of the ensemble listens to the pulse of his or her heart through a stethoscope to set the tempo the music. This generates a particularly organic whole, magnificent orchestrated for a diverse ensemble.
The possibilities and impossibilities of a musical instrument are at the heart of numerous compositions. In recent decades, the boundaries of the possible have been stretched by new instruments, unconventional playing techniques and electronics. However, minimalism also returns to non-instrumented music, through small compositions for any instrument. In this context, Aart Strootman built an instrument for Philip Glass' Two Pages: a one-string miniature guitar specially designed for this composition. Research on this instrument is part of his PhD project at the Academy for Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) at Leiden University.
