College op zondag: het historiestuk van Erwin Olaf
Contact

Sunday lecture on October 1 will focus on the special history piece Liberty – plague and hunger during Leiden's siege (2011).
n 2011, Museum De Lakenhal and Leiden University jointly commissioned artist-photographer Erwin Olaf to create a new history painting, dedicated to the Siege and Relief of Leiden (1574).
Olaf chose to depict the dramatic last days of the Siege, with the promise of liberation by the Beggars in the background. Traditionally, hunger plays a leading role in the story of the Siege and Relief. That is why Olaf instead focused on the plague, which, according to the latest historical insights, claimed more victims than hunger.
“The making of” How did Olaf use new historical insights about the Leiden siege while creating this work? After the film screening of The Making of, curator of photography Maartje van den Heuvel (Leiden University) and curator of current art Nicole Roepers (Museum De Lakenhal) will discuss the historical and contemporary image that Erwin Olaf created.
